Category Game
Fill categories for each letter
2–10 players
The Category Game is an online multiplayer version of the beloved pen-and-paper classic known by many names around the world — Name City Country, Scattergories, or in Turkish, Isim Sehir Ulke. Each round, a random letter is chosen, and every player races to fill in words that start with that letter across multiple categories like Name, City, Country, Animal, and more. When time runs out or the first player submits, everyone votes on whose answers are valid and which ones are duplicates. It is a perfect blend of quick thinking, vocabulary, and creativity that works for all ages.
How to Play
- 1
A random letter is selected at the start of each round.
- 2
Fill in a word starting with that letter for each category (Name, City, Country, etc.).
- 3
Submit your answers before the timer runs out. If another player submits first, a short countdown begins for everyone else.
- 4
After all answers are submitted, the group votes on whether each answer is valid or not.
- 5
Players can also flag duplicate answers — if two or more people wrote the same word, it scores fewer points.
- 6
After voting, scores are tallied and the next round begins with a new letter.
Scoring System
The scoring rewards original thinking. A unique valid answer earns 10 points. If your answer is valid but another player wrote the same word, you both get 5 points instead. Answers voted invalid by the majority score 0 points. Empty answers always score 0. The player with the highest total score after all rounds wins the game.
Tips & Strategies
- •
Think creatively — common answers are more likely to be duplicates, earning you fewer points. Unusual but valid answers score higher.
- •
Speed matters if 'First Submit Countdown' is enabled. Being the first to submit starts a short timer for everyone else.
- •
Do not leave categories blank. Even a guess is better than an empty field, since invalid answers cost nothing.
- •
Pay attention during voting. Marking valid answers as invalid hurts everyone's experience.
- •
For harder letters like X or Q, prepare mentally. Knowing a few unusual words for tricky letters gives you an advantage.
Customizable Settings
The host can customize every aspect of the game before starting. Choose between 1 and 15 categories from a curated list, or create your own custom categories. Set the number of rounds from 1 to 10, and adjust the timer between 30 and 120 seconds per round. You can select the letter language (Turkish, English, or Danish) and exclude specific letters that are too difficult. Optional features include a first-submit countdown, live vote display, and round-by-round results.
Players
The Category Game works with 2 to 10 players. It is great with any group size — smaller games are more intimate and competitive, while larger games create more duplicate drama and voting excitement.
