Undercover

Find the imposter among you

3–10 players

Undercover is a social deduction party game where most players receive the same secret word, but one player — the Undercover — receives a different but related word. Nobody knows who the Undercover is, and the Undercover does not know their word is different. Each round, players take turns giving one-word clues about their secret word, trying to prove they are civilians without revealing too much information that would help the Undercover blend in. After a set number of clue rounds, everyone votes on who they think the Undercover is. If the group identifies and eliminates the Undercover, the civilians win. If the Undercover survives all elimination rounds, they win. It is a game of subtle communication, observation, and bluffing.

How to Play

  1. 1

Each player is secretly assigned a word. Most players (civilians) get the same word, while one player (the Undercover) gets a similar but different word.

  2. 2

Players do not know which role they have. In Classic mode, the Undercover also does not know they have a different word.

  3. 3

Players take turns giving a one-word clue that relates to their secret word. The goal is to prove you are a civilian without being too obvious.

  4. 4

After a configurable number of clue rounds (1 to 5), all players vote on who they believe is the Undercover.

  5. 5

The player with the most votes is eliminated. If there is a tie, no one is eliminated and clue rounds continue.

  6. 6

If the eliminated player was the Undercover, the civilians win. If the Undercover survives all rounds, the Undercover wins.

Win Conditions

Undercover is a team-versus-one game with no point scoring. The civilians win by successfully identifying and voting out the Undercover. The Undercover wins by surviving all elimination rounds without being caught. In Aware mode, the Undercover receives a clue about the civilians' word, giving them a better chance to blend in but making it a harder challenge for the group.

Tips & Strategies

  • As a civilian, give clues that are specific enough to signal other civilians, but vague enough that the Undercover cannot use them.

  • As the Undercover, listen carefully to other clues to figure out the civilians' word, then adjust your clues to match.

  • Watch for players who give unusually vague or generic clues — they might be the Undercover trying to play it safe.

  • Avoid giving the exact same clue as another player, as it draws suspicion regardless of your role.

  • In the voting phase, build your case with evidence from the clue rounds. Which clues seemed off?

Customizable Settings

The host can choose from 7 word pair categories including Football Clubs, Animals, Food and Drinks, Countries, Sports, Sahaba, and Professions. The number of clue rounds before voting can be set from 1 to 5, and the clue timer can be adjusted or set to unlimited. Choose between Classic mode (Undercover does not know they are different) or Aware mode (Undercover gets a hint). The word language can be set to Turkish, English, or Danish.

Players

Undercover works with 3 to 10 players. The sweet spot is 5 to 8 players — enough people that the Undercover can hide, but not so many that clue rounds take too long.
